Delicious Smoothies

I have been meaning to make this post for forever! Smoothies are so tasty and very easy if you have a blender. Usually I make about 400-500mls and have it as a meal (breakfast, mostly). The only problem is they are digested very quickly and make me really cold!

I really want to know if the spinach ones are palatable but I'm scared! Anyone want to make one and tell me if it's good?

I haven't actually tried any of these recipes yet. I usually just put a couple of spoonfuls of vanilla yogurt in the blender, estimate about 1 1/2 cups of frozen fruit, then add however much juice or milk is needed to make it blend smoothly.

My favourite combos:

Mango and/or strawberry, Kiwi, banana with 5 Alive mango citrus juice.

Strawberry, blackberry, raspberry with pomegranate juice.

**Update: I just made peach and mango with apple cider. Soooo good!**

There is a noteworthy calorie difference depending on what type of yogurt you use and whether you use juice or skim milk. Make sure you aren't getting one of the really rich (delicious) yogurts with 200cal per 1/4 cup! Yogurt with artificial sweeteners and skim milk make the lowest calorie smoothie, but yogurt with no artificial sweeteners and juice make the tastiest smoothie. I have found that you can water down the juice a bit and not notice a flavour change.

I also wonder if adding protein shake powder to the smoothie would be a tastier way to get the protein (or will it just ruin the smoothie?). I only have chocolate protein powder right now which I think would add too much icky flavour. The strawberry or vanilla powder might work though. Anyone tried it?

  1. I have tried protein smoothies and it really depends on the type of protein you add. I tried chocolate protein powder and mixed berries and it was super nasty. The best protein smoothie I have made and probably the only one I will make is using Allmax Isoflex Vanilla protein powder (low carbohydrates), one banana, greek yogurt (optional) and a cup of skim milk.

I really should make my pre-gym meal into a smoothie. Great post!

    1. I will have to try that - I was thinking that banana had the best chance of covering up the protein flavour.

Smoothies are definitely good pre-workout! They don't make you feel too full or sluggish (and I'm so cold I don't mind working out to get warm!).
