Haven't Seen You in Years!

The toes say " I Am Done!" . Rethinking my second career as a nail artist ;)

Goals Accomplished: Run 5 km in 35 minutes- Check! (Best time 28:36)
5 sets of five pushups in 5 minutes - Check! ( all done in less than 2 min)
Lose 5 pounds - Check! (starting weight= 136.6, current weight= 130.4)

I hope y'all don't mind if I keep myself in the challenge loop. This has been so great. I am planning on continuing with running, and have set a personal goal to finish a 10 k run by the end of the summer. I also have another 10 lbs to go until I get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. But I am definitely in better shape now than I was then, so I don't think I will let the number stress me out. I just want to fit into my cute skirts again!

I will post some after pictures once I get my helper home:)

Changing the Things We Can

Lord grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.

It might be the AA prayer, but it has been floating through my mind constantly for the past few weeks. This week in particular.

For about a month now, the baby has been having daily episodes. At first we thought it was just some weird thing she was doing. It would happen once a day, and I was concerned so I called her pediatrician. She only has a pediatrician and not just a family doctor because she had a full blown seizure in January. It wasn't febrile, the most common reason for seizure in children, so I have been slightly paranoid ever since that something else might happen to her.

You know that feeling deep down in your gut when something happens and you just *know* it's not good? You can't put your finger on it, or define it in words, but it just makes you feel queasy and unsettled? That's how I felt the first time I saw her have a spell. She was crawling along happily, then she fell onto her right arm, couldn't get up, and seemed stuck and out of it. It just freaked me right out. But I kept telling myself to stay calm, and she would sort herself out. Babies do weird things all the time! She'll be fine! And then it happened again the next day. And the day after that. So off to the pediatric outpatient clinic at the hospital we went, where a doctor thought it might be breath holding spells. I was told to try and get it on tape if it happened again. i took a few movies, none of which I can watch without cringing. I dropped off the video to her doctor, and was really hoping he would tell me not to worry.

But then she started having more and more spells a day. From one, to three, and then for a couple of days five. I tried to get her in to the Ped, but he wouldn't see us until April 10th. So I went to the family doctor, and he basically confirmed what I had begun to suspect. Petit mal seizures. I took her to the ER the next day. It seemed too urgent to wait any longer. She needed to see a doctor, and it needed to be soon.

They did and EEG, and told us she seems to be having partial focal seizures affecting the right side of her body. She needs at least a CT scan (possibly more tests depending if that is clean) and to be started on anti-seizure medication. The meds are given three times a day.

Three times a day I have to give my baby medicine to stop her from having seizures.

I can't even type that without feeling panic rise up and clutch my throat. I have had nausea so persistent it is first trimester worthy. (Don't worry - not pregnant. The nausea is so bad I have checked several times). My appetite is zero. I am only eating because I am still nursing, and want to make sure she is getting the best possible nutrition.

My head is so full of worry, paranoia (is this another one? is she okay? she isn't crying - is she breathing?) and flat out panic that is it a wonder I can function at all.

The only thing I can control? My health. I need to be strong and I need to have a clear mind so I can take the best possible care of my family. Daily exercise and healthy eating are having such a huge positive effect on my whole mind, body and spirit I can't even tell you. Getting the break from worry to complain about how much my butt hurts? Awesome. Running until I feel like my legs will fall off? Bring it on. I am so glad I have this challenge to give me something else to focus on, even for 30 minutes at a time.

Will I be meeting my goals? You betcha. Will I stop exercising and go back to being a professional couch warmer? Never. It's too important to everyone in my family, especially me, that I am healthy and able to cope. There is no time to fall apart.

There isn't a whole lot I can do. But I can do this. And do it well.

And that is a gift.

Weekly weigh in

Today my scale said 131.8 - 0.8 pounds to go!

I did lots of Jillian, ran my best 5k time yet (28.45) and was very careful about what I was eating. (except at brunch at Anne's house. It was too delicious!)

I am getting very close to my pushup goal too - yay!

You guys are such an inspiration to keep going. I have never been so dedicated to fitness in my whole life. This challenge is awesome :)

Back on Track

Level 2 of 30 Day Shred followed by a quick 5 km.

Jillian would say it's the fear leaving my body. I am pretty sure it's breakfast.

Bah.

So I am afraid to step on a scale this week. Last week went so well! And my real life is also going along like clockwork. And then on Sunday I read this and kind of just, well, I don't know. It's truly awful.
I knew her. She went to my high school. She was the same age as my sister. We were in Pony Club together and rode in the same lessons for years. She was such a nice person. A single mom the 5 year old twin boys. It's such a tragedy.

I also knew him. I babysat him for years. I watched him grow up. He had a rough upbringing, but still that is no excuse for such terrible behaviour.

Bah. Just Bah. And humbug too.

So I have been rolling this around in my head, trying to make sense of it, and eating more than I should be.

Tomorrow is a new day, and I will start fresh. But tonight? Please pass the chips.

In Which I Post Revealing Photos of Myself

So here are my "before" shots. Please keep in mind the 10 month old I grew recently, and am still nursing 8-10 times a day. It really makes it hard to diet!

Clearly in need of some makeup - or sleep!

Many fries lost their lives to create such luscious love handles...

Side view of the recently retired baby baker...

Pushup. Gravity is not kind.

There is a washboard under all that laundry... somewhere!

My lovely lady lumps ;)

My hope for this challenge is that I will be able to turn self-loathing in to vanity. (Well, vanity in moderation of course!)

Some major toning and and jiggle reductions are in order. My bathroom has two full walls of mirrors. We call it the bathroom of shame. There is no hiding in there. It is good daily incentive to keep it up - even when I would rather lie down and watch T.V.

Joining the Fun...

...and I mean fun in the loosest sense of the term!

After 3 kids in 3 1/2 years, I figure it's a good idea to start to lose the rest of the baby weight. I am up 15 lbs from where I am happiest. To be "fair" I only have 5 lbs of baby weight left to lose. The other 10 lbs I gained while eating my way through a stressful flooring project right before getting pregnant (again).

My goals are: 1- To run 5 km in under 35 min.
2- To lose 5 lbs of baby weight.
3 - To do 5 sets of 5 pushups in under 5 minutes.

Having the number 5 in all of my goals makes me happy. I am a sucker for that kind of thing!

So far I am on day 6 of torturing myself with Jillian. I am also not eating everything in sight after the kids go to bed, and I am trying to eat a fruit or vegetable at every meal. Which I am aware is basic good habits, but I have developed some seriously bad habits over the last 5 years of constant pregnancy or nursing.

My motivation is to not only fit into, but feel good wearing some new bikinis I bought. I have never worn a two piece that did not include a skirt or shorts. I figure if these guys can pull off a bikini bottom, so can I ;)
